Surface plasmon resonance is a method for investigating processes at metal / air or metal / liquid interfaces. Changes in the refractive index up to a depth of a few are recorded 100nm over the metal film. Such an analyte can be detected with the help of a recognition structure.

Principle

  • Total reflection of light polarized parallel to the plane of incidence on a metal layer applied to a prism
  • Excitation of a plasmon on the metal surface facing away from the prism
  • Wavelength or angle-dependent detection of the intensity of the reflected light

Signal

Displacement of the plasmon as a function of the effective refractive index
